of the nra. it's the same line we've heard before from the nra, but has the country's relationship with guns fundamentally changed since newtown? and what we saw last night from house republicans is yet another symptom of the real problem for the gop. they don't believe in compromise. and they've lurched too far to the right. we begin with where things stand on the fiscal cliff, msnbc political analyst and msnbc contributor jared bernstein. jentle men, president obama tonight said he had spoken with speaker boehner in addition to senate majority leader harry reed. >> i just spoke to speaker boehner and i also met with senator reed. in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for two million americans and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction. >> jared, is this actually a setback for the president in so far as the embarrassed speaker with someone at least with whom he was dealing? and now, the president really doesn't have a negotiation par

vice president of the nra has now broken his silence. he says it's the good guys against the bad guys, and everyone should have a gun. i disagree. if you look today at the speech that we showed just earlier here on msnbc, it's the first time since the newtown mass murder that the nra has spoken out in a speech that brought out the protesters. >> see there? several protesters interrupting. the nra did not focus on regulating semiautomatic weapons in this address, an address i think can only be described as combative. wayne la pierre attacked the press, the game and movie industry, and unnamed politicians for basically getting this story wrong, and he issued a range of criticisms. he staked out his organization's solution to this problem. ultimately as more guns. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. i call on congress today to act immediately to appropriate whatever is necessary to put armed police officers in every single school in this nation. >> there you have it. the nra called on congress to fund armed guards at every school in the nation and

. it's the one thing that would keep people safe. >> that's the nra ceo on "meet the press" yesterday doubling down on the call to arm our nation's schools and puts him at odds of most americans according to 49% saying it's more important to control gun ownership. 42% favor protecting 2nd amendment rights. i want to bring in shannon watts. as many people watched on friday, not only we saw the first reaction in the press briefing that wane lappeire and pressed and wayne is blaming everything but guns and opposed to any new gun regulation and wants to talk about the other possibilities of video games to hollywood to the media to actually arming schools. is this a point of a pr crisis for the nra, especially logically not to have guns in the discussion at all? >> well, unfortunately, i think they know exactly what they're doing. and at the end of the day what they're doing is trying to make a profit and arm everyone in the country and, you know, 80 million moms are not going to let 4 million members of the nra drive the discussion on this. you talk about waking a sleeping giant. i believ

that conversation. this is a frank luntz poll, 74% of nra members support criminal background checks. because nra members like average americans realize that that has nothing to do with the right of a law-abiding citizen to responsibly own a gun. these are the terms on which we have to have this conversation. and we need to hold people like lindsey graham accountable for making statements like that, that automatically equate any sensible conversation in our country about gun laws with second amendment rights because that's not an accurate portrayal of the conversation. >> dan gross, president of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence, great to have you on. thank you, sir. >> thank you. >>> we go back to the fiscal cliff and the president's call for higher tax rates for the wealthy. republicans fighting those hikes, say that one of the victims would be america's small businesses. >> people need to call him and ask him the question are you also talking about the small business folks. >> if you look at what he's doing, as jon kyl mentioned, raising taxes on small businesses -- >> so we hear that
